Voter Access in the 2020 Election

I contributed reporting, data analysis, and copy to a series of front-page investigative stories in USA Today and its local partners about voting access in the midst of a pandemic and contested ballot access. Our team's documentary, Whose Vote Counts, was nominated for a Peabody.

Winemaking and Extreme Heat

For my master's project at Columbia, I explored how hard it is for winemakers in one of California's most climatically extreme wine regions to plan for predicted rises in extreme heat. I found that even though these artisans mostly take climate science seriously, it's been challenging for them to read signal from noise in an extremely complex and uncertain field.

Visualizing the Spread of COVID-19

I built a cloud-based data pipeline for Eurasianet's COVID tracker for Central Asia and the Caucasus, and hand-coded the prototype of the design in D3.js, including such features as dynamic shifts between linear and logarithmic views.

More of My Code, Words, and Voice

Patent Filings Are Dominated by the Pacific Rim

Using d3.js, I illustrate how the Pacific economies of East Asia and America's West Coast have come to dominate patent filings.

Runners Have It Best in the Bay

I used historical climate data to illustrate a truth this Bay Area chauvinist already knew: the Bay has the best weather for outdoor exercise.

As Ukraine Tilts West, Its Politicians Ditch Russian

I scraped 7k+ government documents and used a classification algorithm to find that Ukrainian parliamentarians are speaking less Russian, no matter who's been in charge in Kiev.

Mapping in D3

Mapping exercises in d3.js: choropleths, hex maps, bubbles, and small multiples.

'Scrollytelling' in D3

Exercises illustrating world life expectancy, seasonal home prices, and climate averages through dynamic scrolling in d3.js.

'Smaller Banks Give Some Businesses Better Shot at PPP Loans'

I reported and produced this story for Uptown Radio, a weekly radio news show at Columbia J School, about the revival that the PPP loan program brought for community banks at the outset of the COVID-19 crisis.

The Political Shift of the Suburbs, 2018

At my former employer, Credit Karma, I looked into the political geography of financial security. I noticed that the "swingiest" congressional districts had higher credit scores than "safe" ones.

'With Tasting Rooms Shut, Wineries Look To Market Directly to Consumers'

For Uptown Radio, I covered the business implications of a wine industry used to relying on retail having to switch, overnight, to direct-to-consumer sales, thanks to the COVID-19 crisis.

'Turkmen Activists in New York Stage Rare Protest'

For Eurasianet, an outlet focused on the former Soviet Union, I covered a protest by Turkmen activists undertaken at considerable personal risk to their families, against their government's mismanagement of the COVID-19 crisis.

Radial Charts and Small Multiples in D3

Radial chart exercises (including small multiples) on climate—and basketball stats—in d3.js.

Area, Line, and Small Multiple Charts in D3

Exercises depicting trends in income, emissions, and fertility in d3.js.
